Van Hassel is a pioneering contemporary artist whose work spans a wide range of mediums, from candy art to sculptures. He began his artistic career in 1980, after years of exploring various creative disciplines, and quickly gained recognition for his innovative approach. In 1983, he founded two exclusive galleries at the prestigious Sonesta and Krasnapolsky hotels in Amsterdam, establishing himself as a significant figure in the Dutch art scene.
Van Hassel’s art is characterized by its vibrant, playful nature, blending everyday objects with extraordinary craftsmanship to create works that are both visually striking and conceptually rich. His candy art—a whimsical yet meticulously crafted form—captures the imagination, inviting viewers into a world where color, form, and texture come alive in unexpected ways. His sculptural pieces are equally bold, transforming common materials into artistic expressions that challenge perceptions of art and materiality.
In 1990, Van Hassel expanded his expertise to the realm of screen printing, a technique he mastered not only for his own creations but also as a sought-after printer for other artists. His reputation for excellence in this medium led to long-term collaborations with some of the most iconic figures in the art world, including the legendary Herman Brood, for whom he served as the dedicated printer for 12 years. Esteemed artists such as Corneille, Jan Cremer, Rob Scholte, Shunyam, and Peter Diem have also entrusted Van Hassel with the production of their works, cementing his status as a master printer.
Van Hassel’s diverse body of work reflects his ability to merge traditional techniques with contemporary themes, creating art that resonates across generations and cultures. Whether through his playful sculptures or vibrant prints, his pieces often invite deeper reflection on society, consumerism, and the role of art in daily life. His works have captivated audiences both locally and internationally, making him a prominent and influential voice in modern art.
As an artist, Van Hassel continues to evolve, pushing the boundaries of form and material while maintaining a deep connection to the joy and creativity that define his work. His contributions to the art world, whether through his own creations or his collaborations with other artists, have left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.
